Sea Thru Kayaks VI, the US Virgin Islands only clear Kayak, located on St. Croix, USVI

So, you think Puerto Rico and Vieques have the best Bioluminescent Bays in the Eastern Caribbean? If so, maybe you need to head to St Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Not only does St. Croix have one "Bio Bay"... we have two!

What is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence simply means "living light". Depending on the night and location you may see three types of bioluminescence with the most common being Dinoflagellates. There are also Ctenophora (comb jellies) and glow worms.

Why use clear kayaks?

Simple, there is no better way to see bioluminescence as you paddle though the magical "glowing water" in our clear "Sea Thru Kayaks". Co- owner Bryce Scott grew up just a few hundred feet from the bioluminescent bay at Salt River. "I've known about this since I was 8 years old... I've thrown rocks in it, I've paddled my boogie board through it, I've tried to see it using a scuba mask... using a clear kayak gives you the best possible view of this phenomenon. The view of the bioluminescence through our clear kayaks is so good that you don't have to swim in the creepy dark water at night!"

Bioluminescence at Salt River National Park

All tours take place at Historic Salt River National Park. This bay is deeper with a high concentration of Dinoflagellates that make the water glow every time the water is agitated. You will see "stars" moving underneath your glass bottom kayak and it will look like your going through the galaxy at warp speed. You'll also see fish swimming below your kayak as they spark up the water. Just about every night you might also hit one of the many comb jellies that are only found in this bay. When you hit a comb jelly fish with your paddle they light up the water like a neon green glow stick. Comb jellies are harmless, so if you're brave you might even be able to catch one in your hand, how cool is that!

When is the best time to view Bioluminescence?

* Because of weather conditions and the cycle of the moon you can't see bioluminescence every night. It's always a good idea to book a few days in advance just in case conditions change leaving you more options to rebook if necessary. We always know when the conditions are the best so just call us.
